Gang Green

I’m not so sure anyone really pays any attention to these Greenpeace studies, but the latest one gives harsh marks to Nintendo and some other big name companies for their reported disdain for environmentally friendly practices. The video game OEM scored a zero — the lowest possible score — with Greenpeace claiming “Nintendo completely fails to show any environmental credentials.” Ouch.

I would take issue with the video clip, however, which purports to show a store employee refusing a customer who wants to recycle a Nokia phone. While Greenpeace asserts this is evidence of misleading product takeback programs, in my opinion it may just have been an uninformed salesperson.

  1. Remarkably, there’s no report of exploding Nintendo devices. Meanwhile, portable electronic giants such as Apple and Dell have shed their HAZMAT battery lines for what is turning out to be environmentally-safe battery “bombs”. LGE, who scored above-average in the Greenpeace report, is currently trying to figure-out why one of their environmentally-friendly cell phone batteries recently blasted a hole in the chest of a S. Korean customer*. Neither the phone nor the customer survived, but the silver lining for Greenpeace may be that the Earth wasn’t poisoned in the process.
