Quanta-Foxconn: Dancing, or Just Dreaming?

Is Quanta interested in Foxconn, or is it idle speculation?

That’s the question on many analysts’ minds today. Quanta chief executive Michael Wang stepped down Monday after 19 years at the company, and as this Forbes piece notes, Quanta’s founders have long been interested in an alliance with the world’s largest ODM.

But while the Forbes article says the romancing of Foxconn is coming from Quanta’s remaining execs, even that’s open to debate. To wit: Wang said in an internal email that Hon Hai is “better as an ally than an enemy,” and claimed the computer maker can’t rely solely on organic growth.

For its part, the Wall Street Journal, which just ran a long piece on Hon Hai founder Terry Gou, downplays talk of an impending marriage.

Foxconn has historically avoided acquisitions. So too has Quanta. Now that they are clearcut leaders in their respective markets, will they finally throw off those self-imposed chains?
